Three papers, which I am a co-author of, will be presented in the 17th International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference (ISMIR 2016) and, its satellite event, the 3rd International Digital Libraries for Musicology workshop (DLfM 2016). The papers are titled “MORTY: A toolbox for mode recognition and tonic identification,” “Time-delayed melody surfaces for rāga recognition” and “On the use of note onsets for improved lyrics-to-audio alignment in Turkish makam music.” The events take place between 7 and 12 August 2016.

The first paper (PDF) presents a toolbox called morty (GitHub), which implements a generalized pitch-distribution based mode recognition and tonic identification methodology. It also reports the results of exhaustive experiments on Ottoman-Turkish makam music. The code, dataset, experiments and results are all open and the experiments are designed with reproducibility in mind. The second paper (PDF) presents a novel feature for melody description and shows that it outperforms pitch distributions in a rāga recognition task. In this paper, we used morty for the comparative experiments. The third paper (PDF) investigates the usage of note onsets to improve audio-lyrics alignment applied to a cappella audio recordings of Ottoman-Turkish makam music.
