Mode recognition and tonic identification

In many music cultures, the melodies adhere to a particular melodic framework, which specifies the melodic characteristics of the music. While the function and the understanding of these frameworks are distinct from a cultural perspective, in a broader sense they may be considered as the “modes” of the studied music culture. Mode recognition is an important complementary task in computational musicology, music discovery, music similarity and recommendation.

Tonic, which acts as the reference tuning pitch for the melody, is another fundamental concept in many music traditions. Its automatic identification is relevant for establishing the reference pitch, when we analyse the melodic content of the music.
